چکیده

IP lookup with the longest prefix match is a core function of Internet routers. Partitioned Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM)-based search engines have been widely used for parallel lookups despite power inefficiency. In this paper, to achieve a higher throughput and power-efficient IP lookup, we introduce hybrid CAM (HCAM) architecture with SRAM. In our approach, we break a prefix into a collapsed prefix in CAM and a stride in SRAM. This prefix collapse reduces the number of prefixes that results in reduced memory usage by a factor of 2.8. High throughput is achieved by storing the collapsed prefixes in partitioned CAMs. Our record for 2 BGP tables shows that an HCAM saves 3.6 times energy consumption compared to the TCAM based implementation.

A High Performance Parallel IP Lookup Technique Using Distributed Memory Organization and ISCB-Tree Data Structure

The IP Lookup Process is a key bottleneck in routing due to the increase in routing table size, increasing traıc and migration to IPv6 addresses. The IP address lookup involves computation of the Longest Prefix Matching (LPM), which existing solutions such as BSD Radix Tries, scale poorly when traıc in the router increases or when employed for IPv6 address lookups. In this paper, we describe a ...

Design of Power Gated ML Sensing Low Power CAM

A Content Addressable Memory (CAM) is a memory unit that performs single clock cycle content matching instead of addresses. CAMs are vast used in look-up table functions, network routers and cache controllers. Since basic lookups are performed over all the stored memory information there is high power dissipation. In reality there is always trade-offs between power consumption, area used and th...

A power-efficient TCAM architecture for network forwarding tables

Stringent memory access and search speed requirements are two of the main bottlenecks in wire speed processing. Most viable search engines are implemented in content addressable memories (CAMs). CAMs have high operational speed advantage over other memory search algorithms. However, this performance advantage comes with a price of higher silicon area, and higher power consumption. Ternary CAMs ...

Packet Classification Using Extended TCAMs

CAMs are the most popular practical method for implementing packet classification in high performance routers. Their principal drawbacks are high power consumption and inefficient representation of filters with port ranges. A recent paper [11] showed how partitioned TCAMs can be used to implement IP route lookup with dramatically lower power consumption. We extend the ideas in [11] to address t...
